Being pregnant does not mean that you can not travel. On the contrary, going on the road pregnant, you are “drawing” the first shared memories with your child. So relax and enjoy them fully. Just think about your comfort.
Whether you travel by car, by plane or train, it can be quite stressful for you. And your companions and everybody surrounding you, who is not aware of the delicate situation. So if you are pregnant and you decide to take the road, take some preliminary measures to ensure a comfortable, safe and carefree experience.
One fundamental question when a pregnant woman goes on the road is what vehicle to choose. Is it safe to travel by air, can the safety belt harm the baby, how to deal with nausea, and the discomfort of the long seating in one position? Well, everything has a solution. Most importantly, before any trip every pregnant woman have to consult with the supervising doctor and discuss her plans with him.
Usually the safest air travel during pregnancy is considered the second trimester (between 14th and 27th weeks of gestation). After a period of morning sickness the body regains its energy and the possibility of miscarriage decreases. However, for women in late pregnancy(after 36 weeks of gestation) is not advisable to travel because childbirth can surprise them before the scheduled term. But because each airline has a policy about pregnancy, you should make a preliminary report and avoid any disappointment from failure to trip.
Traveling by car is absolutely no obstacle for the condition of pregnant women. It’s even better alternative to the plane as it allows frequent breaks for exercise, refreshment and the needs of the mother. The belt does not endanger the baby, if it is placed properly – it must go above and below the abdomen (between breasts) in no way through it, since a possible catastrophe can cause placental abruption. Same applies for the belt on the plane. Remember – the best way to protect your baby is by protecting yourself!
Carry a copy of your prenatal record, which usually includes your age, date of your last menstrual cycle, your due date, information on previous pregnancies, risk factors for certain diseases, research information to date, the results of ultrasound, history of diseases and surgery, and a bunch of baby’s vital signs recorded at regular checkups. Thus, if necessary, you will be able to provide full details of her pregnancy in a hospital or clinic, or to seek counseling by phone.
No matter what type of transport you choose when you’re pregnant, if you went on the road, you should consider your health and relieve unpleasant physical ailments of long seating. They most often include numb legs, swollen ankles and lower back pain.
Drink plenty of liquids, but not coffee, tea and soft drinks but water or fruit juice. Wear comfortable shoes that can easily be taken off. If you travel by plane every half hour walk to the bathroom and back (so it is advisable to choose an aisle seat). Lift your feet high at every opportunity, stretch and do exercises for your ankles – it will encourage circulation.
Dress comfortably, with loose clothing, which do not burrow into the abdomen and hips. Do not forget the belt for pregnant women, which will relieve tension in your back and will provide you with comfort throughout the journey. Put it in the morning and remove it when you arrive at the destination.
To distract your attention while traveling, carry a book, music device with favourite music, something to eat (though pregnant women need more frequent meals). Or just take a brief nap.
If traveling in winter, pre-warm your car. Wear comfortable clothes in layers to help you easily take them off gradually if you become too warm. Obtain a neck pillow and ear plugs, with wet towels for refreshment and diary to write – you never know what ideas can emerge in motion.
