Greenland or Grenland (Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning “Land of the Greenlanders” in Danish) is the biggest island on the planet. It is an extreme travel destination. 84% of the island territory is covered with ice. The arctic conditions on the island limit the living areas only to the shoreline.

The island was unknown for Europeans until the 10th century when it was found by Vikings who got lost on their way to Iceland. Although it was uninhabited when the vikings arrived, long before that there where Inuits living there. In hundreds of years the Inuits where the only inhabitants of Greenland .

However based on the vikings’ arrival on the island the Danish colonized it in the 18th century.

Although nowadays Greenland is part of Denmark it has an inner autonomy since 1979. Greenland is the only territory that left the European Union since it was established.
