Growth of 3-4% in the global tourism industry is expected in 2012

After a second year of recovery, the global tourism industry will continue to register growth in 2012. International travels are expected to achieve historical record, exceeding 1 billion.

This year higher growth will be registered in Asia and Africa. There will be a gradual increase in travel across Europe due to the riots in the Middle East as stated in the report of the World Tourism Organization of the UN. Last year the sector reached 4.4 percent increase.

Higher growth in developed countries

Despite the raging economic crisis and the collapse of tourism in some countries in 2011 the sector continued its recovery. International travels have reached 980 million, an increase of 4.4% compared to 2010, show the data of the World Tourism Organization. Statistics show that unlike previous years, growth is higher in developed than in developing countries – 5 versus 3.8 percent. This can be explained with the collapse of tourism in some North African and Asian countries because on riots or disasters.

Traveling in Europe surpassed half a billion

Europe is the World Tourism Organization’s  “top performer” in 2011 topping the charts with 6% annual growth. Traveling across the continent reached 503 million as the best results are achieved by Mediterranean countries and Central and Eastern Europe, with an increase of 8%. According to some data, growth in traveling in Europe is also expected, but it will be within 2 to 4%.

“Arab Spring” brought loss to North Africa

After the riots in North Africa last year, the tourism in the countries of this region has registered a decrease of 12%, according to the World Tourist Organization. The countries in the Middle East even saw a decrease of 8%.

Logically, the other heavily damaged destination is Japan, which is still recovering from the devastating earthquake in March 2011. All these countries are expected to break the negative trend of the sector this year, but recovery will be relatively slow. Growth estimates are from 0% to a maximum of 5% for individual countries.

Emerging markets with the highest growth in tourism expenditure

Data for 2011 show that emerging markets recorded the highest growth in tourism expenditure again. Last year, Chinese people spent 38% more for international tourism, Russians – 21%, Brazilians and Indians – 32%. The costs of holidays abroad have increased for the Germans, the most traveling nation in the world, as well as the Americans. The increase was 4 and 5 per cent, shows the data.
